A filler is a gel injected with a fine needle into the lips and along their border. It fills the tissue from within: the lips look fuller, the outline more defined, and dry lips look more hydrated. Most such gels are based on hyaluronic acid — a substance the skin itself contains that holds water; the specialist will tell you at the consultation which product the centre uses and how much you are likely to need. How noticeable the change should be is discussed before the treatment: many people want not a “new” mouth but their own lips, a little fuller.
It is chosen for thin lips or lips that have lost volume with age, a blurred outline, slight asymmetry and dry lips. Whether it suits you, and how much gel is sensible in one session, is decided by the specialist at the assessment.
The treatment is carried out by a suitably qualified specialist and only after an assessment. They ask about your health, medication and allergies, and check for contraindications — these include pregnancy and breastfeeding, cold sores or other inflammation on or around the lips, allergy to any component of the product and a number of chronic conditions; if in doubt, they will ask you to consult a doctor first. The lips are numbed with a cream, cleaned with an antiseptic, and the gel is injected in small amounts while symmetry is checked. It feels like brief pricks and a sense of fullness; the specialist will explain beforehand what to expect.
The lips almost always swell afterwards and look fuller for the first few days than they will later; there may be redness, tenderness and bruising — this usually settles within a few days. Do not press or massage your lips, and use a cold pack to reduce swelling; for the first few days avoid saunas and strenuous exercise. Serious complications are rare, but if you notice severe or increasing pain, pale or darkening skin, or any change in your vision, contact the centre straight away.
