A filler is a gel injected with a fine needle directly beneath a line. It fills the line from within, so the crease becomes shallower. Most such gels are based on hyaluronic acid — a substance the skin itself contains that holds water; the specialist will tell you at the consultation which product the centre uses. Unlike the correction of expression lines, which temporarily reduces muscle activity, a filler does not change your expressions: it works on a crease that has already formed.
It is chosen when forehead lines are visible at rest, without moving the eyebrows. If the lines appear mainly when you make expressions, the specialist may suggest correction of expression lines — also on the centre’s menu — or a combination of the two. What suits you is decided at the assessment.
The treatment is carried out by a suitably qualified specialist and only after an assessment. They ask about your health, medication and allergies, and check for contraindications — these include pregnancy and breastfeeding, inflammation or a rash on the forehead, allergy to any component of the product and a number of chronic conditions; if in doubt, they will ask you to consult a doctor first. The skin is cleaned with an antiseptic and the gel is injected in small amounts along the lines. It feels like brief pricks; sensitivity varies from person to person, and the specialist will explain beforehand what to expect.
Afterwards there may be redness, slight swelling, tenderness and bruising at the injection points — this usually settles within a few days. Do not rub or massage your forehead, and use a cold pack to reduce swelling; for the first few days avoid saunas and strenuous exercise. Serious complications are rare, but if you notice severe or increasing pain, pale or darkening skin, or any change in your vision, contact the centre straight away.
